Kelly Zhao
Kelly Zhao is an Engineering Intern at Renewable Community Initiative. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering at Stony Brook University, Kelly brings a strong foundation in electronics, hardware design, and technical problem-solving to RCI’s engineering team.
Since joining RC in June 2025, Kelly has supported engineering design and prototyping through detailed technical drawings and 3D modeling using AutoCAD and Fusion 360. Her work includes researching hydrogen pumps, electrolyzers, and related energy systems to support project planning and design development. She also assists with prototype testing and evaluation, helping identify performance limitations and recommend improvements that enhance efficiency and operational safety.
Kelly’s experience extends beyond renewable energy systems to include transportation infrastructure. During her summer 2026 position as a Transportation Construction Inspector with the New York State Department of Transportation, she monitored construction activities, documented project progress, and reviewed electrical installations. This experience strengthened her understanding of engineering standards, quality assurance, and the integration of electrical systems into complex infrastructure projects.
At Stony Brook University, Kelly also serves as team lead for the Bioengineering Education, Application and Research (BEAR) team within the Vertically Integrated Projects program. In this role, she leads electronics development, circuit design, component selection, prototyping, and system integration for robotic-assisted surgical equipment. Her hands-on experience with microcontrollers, sensors, motors, and electromechanical systems reflects her ability to apply engineering principles to practical, real-world challenges.
Kelly combines technical knowledge, hands-on engineering experience, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving. At Renewable Community Initiative, she applies these skills to support the development and evaluation of innovative energy technologies, contributing to our mission of advancing engineering solutions that support a more sustainable energy future.
