Amir Clayton “AC” Powell
Amir Clayton “AC” Powell connects people across cultural, generational, political and socioeconomic barriers. He has provided executive direction and growth leadership to nonprofit organizations and start-ups for more than twenty years. AC speaks with passion, depth and a bit of humor about issues of the day.
Settling property and casualty claims as an insurance adjuster helped AC become a skilled negotiator, which certainly paid dividends as he completed his legal studies, earning a Juris Doctor degree with concentrations in publicly held companies and small business entities. AC would later use that training to assist entrepreneurs organize their businesses and obtain financing as the Director of the DC Chamber of Commerce Business Resource Center. He began teaching American Government, Business Law, Criminal Justice, Ethics, Political Science and Resource Methods for various colleges and universities throughout Northern Virginia in 2014. And in 2017, AC become the Executive Director & CEO of the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE). By 2022, AC caught the attention of a board member at the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS). In September of that year, AC assumed the role of President & CEO of NIBS. AC currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Renewable Community Initiative Inc. as well as a Workforce Instructor for Northern Virginia Community College.
Along with other volunteer endeavors, AC serves as a board member for several nonprofit
organizations. This Hoosier turned Washingtonian and self-described wanna-be New Yorker lives in Northern Virginia.
